The Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing Changed My Life

"Whilst it took me six years to make the commitment to do the Diploma. How thankful I am that I did it. I’m forever grateful for the experience and excited more than ever about my future because of it."

Honestly, I never expected a course to be such a game-changer, yet the Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing from the Langley Group Institute has absolutely transformed how I live. This may sound dramatic (and I tend to be melodramatic), yet this stuff literally kept me sane during one of the most turbulent periods of my life.

The biggest revelation for me was discovering that this isn't some fluffy "think positive thoughts and everything will be fine" approach. It's grounded in science, focuses on human potential and helps people flourish. During some really challenging months when everything felt like it was falling apart, this strengths-based approach became my anchor. Instead of constantly focusing on what was going wrong, I learned to identify and build on what I was doing right.

Engagement: Finding My Flow Again

The unit on engagement was a real eye-opener. Learning about flow states and character strengths (VIA strengths assessment) helped me understand why some tasks energised me while others completely drained me. I started redesigning how I approached both work and personal projects, tapping into my natural strengths instead of constantly trying to fix my weaknesses.

The strength-spotting exercises were brilliant too. I began noticing and acknowledging strengths in myself and others, and the ripple effect was incredible.

Meaning: Getting Clear on What Really Matters

Meaning was the big a-ha moment for me. Drawing on Viktor Frankl's work and modern research on meaning-making, I finally got clarity on what was driving me beyond just ticking boxes or meeting expectations. It reinforced my passion for meaning and purpose in my life.

I learned to ask better questions – not just "What do I want to achieve?" yet also "How can I contribute? What legacy am I creating?" This shift to contribution-focused thinking completely changed how I approached my dreams.

Relationships: The Foundation of Everything

This unit was pure gold. I learned about active constructive responding, high-quality connections, and positive communication techniques that have revolutionised how I show up in my relationships.

Learning from Martin Seligman and Barbara Fredrickson, I realised how relationships are at the centre of flourishing, allowing me to build stronger relationships. My relationships became more energised, conversations flowed better, and I found myself quickly developing genuine relationships.

Emotions: The Full Human Experience

The emotions unit taught me something crucial. It's okay to have bad days and not feel optimistic. It doesn't mean I've failed. It's about emotional agility (thanks, Susan David). Learning about Barbara Fredrickson's Broaden-and-Build Theory showed me how positive emotions literally expand our thinking and build our resources for handling challenges. Again, a life-changing insight.

What I loved most is that this approach honours the full range of human experience. I didn't have to pretend I wasn't struggling or paste on a fake smile. Instead, I learned to regulate my emotions more effectively while still allowing myself to feel everything. The practices like gratitude, mindfulness, and savouring became my daily lifelines. They were essential survival tools.

I became much better at letting go when I needed to. I felt like an ancient Stoic scholar, relaxing in the garden because I can't control what's going on around me. Instead of ruminating on things, I developed the skills to acknowledge difficult emotions and then consciously shift my focus to what I could influence.

Goals: A Completely New Approach

I've always been really good at goal setting, yet understanding the psychology behind goals helped me see things from a different perspective. Goal setting capitalises on our brain's power to create something positive mentally and physically. Instead of setting goals based on what I thought I "should" do or trying to fix perceived deficits, I learned to focus on intrinsic motivation and personal meaning. Instead of feeling like I was constantly failing to meet external expectations, I could set goals that actually energised me and aligned with my values.

The shift from deficit-focused thinking to growth-focused thinking was liberating. Rather than asking "What's wrong with me that I need to fix?" I learned to ask "What's possible for me? How can I grow? How can I contribute?" This reframe made goal-setting feel exciting again, rather than like another thing to beat myself up about.
