🎓 Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing

What drew you to study the Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing?
"I was drawn to the course because it combined academic rigour with a practical, human focus, encouraging both reflection and action. It promised not only to enrich my professional practice yet also to enhance my own life - a dual purpose that felt both exciting and necessary at that point in my journey."
When I began the Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing online in 2022, I was working as a primary school teacher in Ireland. This was a time of great transition in education, with team members and students alike adjusting to post-pandemic realities. I had long been passionate about wellbeing and pastoral care, and my professional focus had begun to shift towards supporting both pupils and colleagues in building resilience, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging.
At that stage, I wanted to deepen my understanding of what truly underpins wellbeing, not just as a concept, yet as a lived experience. I was looking for a course that would integrate research-based theory with practical application, allowing me to translate what I learned into meaningful change within my school community. When I was later appointed Assistant Principal in 2023, I found that the insights and practices I had gained became central to how I approached leadership, with a focus on strengths, connection, and cultivating a culture where school personnel and students alike can thrive.
Personally, I was also seeking a renewed sense of balance and purpose. Like many educators, I had felt the pressures of an ever-demanding profession and wanted to explore how positive psychology could help sustain energy, optimism, and fulfilment.
How was your experience studying this course?
"The Diploma exceeded my expectations in every way. It offered knowledge and a framework for living and leading with greater authenticity, optimism, and compassion."
The Diploma was truly transformative, both personally and professionally. What struck me most was how practical and engaging the learning was. Sue Langley created a genuine sense of connection and community, and the content was immediately applicable. Every course unit invited reflection, dialogue, and experimentation with tools that had the potential to shift both mindset and behaviour.
One of my “ah ha” moments came during our exploration of strengths-based approaches. Understanding how to recognise and use my own character strengths, and to see those of others, changed how I viewed leadership, teaching, and relationships. I realised that wellbeing is not just about the absence of stress or challenge, yet about how we draw on our inner resources to meet life’s demands.
Another key insight came through the study of positive emotions and their broadening effect on thinking and creativity. I began to appreciate how deliberately cultivating gratitude, hope, and kindness can transform the atmosphere of a classroom or a staffroom.
The most challenging aspect was slowing down to fully engage with the reflective practices; as educators, we are often more comfortable “doing” than “being”. Yet this self-reflection became one of the most valuable aspects of the course.
How has the Diploma helped you spread positive ripples in your world?
"The Diploma of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing was far more than a course; it was a catalyst. It equipped me to live and lead with hope, to nurture wellbeing with purpose, and to inspire others to create their own ripples of positivity and growth."
Since completing the Diploma in 2022, the learning has become deeply woven into both my personal life and professional identity. The phrase “spreading positive ripples” captures perfectly how the impact of this course continues to expand, often quietly, yet with meaningful reach. I went on to complete the Strengths Profile accreditation with Langley Group (Langley Group Institute's sister company) to build on the Diploma and my previous studies to become an EMCC-accredited coach.
As the wellbeing team leader in my school, I have drawn heavily on the principles and practices I learned. The Diploma gave me the confidence, the language and evidence base to embed wellbeing into everyday school life. I led a School Self-Evaluation process focused on wellbeing, engaging pupils, school personnel, and parents through surveys and discussions to identify strengths and areas for growth. This process was informed by the Diploma’s emphasis on systems thinking and the recognition that wellbeing is collective - a shared responsibility that grows from relationships, culture, and values.
I have also developed CPD sessions for the school team centred on themes such as gratitude, resilience, and self-care. These sessions draw on positive psychology interventions - simple, evidence-informed practices that make a genuine difference. For example, encouraging the team to identify and use their strengths has fostered greater collegiality and confidence, while introducing short reflective moments in team meetings has supported connection and calm.
Beyond structured initiatives, the Diploma has influenced how I lead every day. I aim to create an atmosphere of psychological safety and belonging where people feel seen and valued. Small gestures such as a word of encouragement, a moment of active listening, or an acknowledgement of effort can send ripples far beyond what we immediately perceive.
Personally, I continue to apply the learning by practising gratitude, setting intentional goals, and nurturing relationships that energise me. The Diploma reminded me that wellbeing begins with the self, and that self-compassion is the foundation for authentic leadership.
The ripples of this experience also extend into my ongoing professional development. I am now completing a Doctorate in Education, where my research explores mentoring relationships and wellbeing in teacher education. The perspective I gained through the Diploma has profoundly shaped how I approach this research - grounded in empathy, strengths, and the belief that flourishing is a shared journey.
"Spreading these ripples has brought immense fulfilment. Seeing positive change in colleagues, pupils, and the wider school culture affirms that even small, intentional actions can have lasting effects."
